Durango’s History & Amenities

Durango was formed by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Company in 1880 to serve as a mining outpost.  Around the turn of the century Durango started to become a vacation destination, with the development of more amenities. By the mid 1950 Durango had an airport and Fort Lewis College, a few years later the famous Purgatory Ski Resort was built.

Today people live and visit Durango for numerous reasons. Some of the more popular ones include skiing at Purgatory, visiting Mesa Verde, biking adventures, fishing, backpacking, and so much more.

Durango residents also have access to Mercy Regional Medical Center, Southwest Colorado’s most sophisticated hospitals. There is a 71,000 square foot recreation center in town along with a new library.

Custom Building in Durango

Ever since Durango moved passed its mining roots into a vacation destination there has been a demand for custom homes. We’ve been building homes here and in the La Plata area for a long time. There are a few different locations within Durango we recommend considering for your new home.

Animas Valley – If you head out on 550 North of town towards Purgatory you will go through the beautiful Animas Valley. It is an idillic location with the river running through it and steep canon walls on either side. There are also several ranches and farms located in the valley so if you like horses and other livestock this might be the perfect place for you

Upper 160 Near Hesperus – If you enjoy views, this is the place to be. Located west of town you will be able to see the Twin Buttes and the La Plata mountains. The famous Colorado trail is also up this way so if you enjoy mountain biking or hiking you will have a 500+ mile trail in your back yard

Lake Nighthorse – Lake Nighthorse is a newer addition to the Durango community and the nearby location is a beautiful spot for a home. If you take Wild Cat Canon road off of 160 West you will go up a beautiful canon with prime locations for building on large plots.
